• The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas •
This is one of the best YA books I’ve read.
The story follows Starr, a black girl living in a rough neighbourhood, who goes to a prestigious school where she is one of the only black pupils. One day, she witnesses her friend, Khalil, being shot by a police officer. The Hate U Give explores the aftermath of this event, and its consequences both for Starr and the wider community.
You really root for Starr, and I liked that her friends and family were such well developed characters - I especially loved the dynamic between her parents! There was a good balance between funny moments with the secondary characters, and also
talking about a serious and important issue.
The book left me feeling frustrated by the injustices many black people face, but the ending still managed to be satisfying. I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Black Lives Matter movement. It’s an important book that should be more widely read.
